| Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), a new type of solar cell, has aroused worldwide attention which arises from its merits of low cost, ease of fabrication and environmental friendliness, etc. The development history, basic structure and working principle of the DSSC are introduced briefly, and the classification and development of DSSC are stated in detail. Dye sensitizers are divided into two major categories—organic dyes and metal-organic compounds, and organic dyes can roughly be classified into several parts:triphenylamine, coumarin, indole, cyanine and polyene. Designing and exploiting novel organic dye sensitizers is an efficient way to enhance the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE, η) of the DSSC. Moreover, cooperative sensitization of several kinds of sensitizers contributes more to the J?sc and V?oc of DSSC than that of single sensitizer, demonstrating that co-sensitization can be an another path to improve photovoltaic performance of DSSC. Finally the paper outlines the development potential of organic dyes.
